When Burn Authorization Not Required

Authorization is not required to burn yard waste as long as you meet the required setbacks and there are no local, city or county ordinances in place that prohibit burning.

These requirements are as follows:

  • You must be at least 25 feet from your house, and
  • You must be at least 25 feet from any wildlands, brush, or combustible structure (e.g. shed), and
  • You must be at least 50 feet from a road or street, and
  • You must be at least 150 feet from other occupied buildings or structures, and
  • It is recommended that burning be done in a barrel or pit with a screen over it
  • Burning is not permitted on rainy, foggy or windy days
  • Only natural vegetation can be burned. No processed wood, rubber, wiring, PVC piping or shingles

Note: Piles greater than eight feet in diameter will require an authorization from the Florida Forest Service, must have suppression equipment on hand, and need to meet additional setback requirements.

  • Please have the address of the property on hand when you call.   
  • If the property is vacant land, you will need a nearby address or crossroads so we can locate the property to enter the violation.    
  • Anonymous complaints are not accepted by Hernando County Code Enforcement, effective July 1, 2021. Please provide your name, address, and phone number.
  • If we need to enter your property to view the violation, please indicate your authorization to do so in the description section of the complaint.
  • If you get a voicemail and have an address, feel free to leave the following information:

  • Watering on the wrong day or at wrong time
  • Dismantled or inoperable vehicles

  • Hens and roosters in residential zoning (4 hens are allowed with a permit, no roosters)
  • Business in a residence
  • Land use permits
  • Basketball poles in the right-of-way
  • Setback violations
  • Illegal stormwater discharge/dumping

** Convenience Center is for residential use only by property owners and residents of homes that pay the annual solid waste disposal assessment through their property taxes.  To use this facility, property owners and residents must bring the waste in themselves and show proof of ownership/residency of a qualified property. Commercial waste is NOT accepted at this location.
